Karen Austin – Co-Facilitator
Karen co-facilitates the MASTERY of Self Expression in Los Angeles.
Karen has been involved with the MASTERY of Self Expression for 30 years. She has taught at the Screen Actors Guild Conservatory, the American Film Institute, and the West Coast Ensemble. The MASTERY is the foundation of her teaching. She holds regular classes in scene study and audition technique. Her class website can be found at www.karenaustinacting.com.
Her acting career includes hundreds of hours of television, film and stage work. Some of the feature films in which she has starred include: Summer Rental (John Candy’s wife), Jagged Edge, Taming of the Shrew, Lazarus, and Far From Home. She has starred in over a dozen movies for television including Laura Lansing Slept Here (with Katherine Hepburn), The Hillside Stranglers, and Casey’s Gift, as well as the mini-series Celebrity, Murder One, and Pieces. She was a series regular on Night Court, Live Shot, and Hollywood Boulevard. She plays recurring characters on over a dozen television series including Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere, The Trials of Rosie O’Neil, LA Law, Girlfriends, and Rodney, and she has “guested” on multiple dozens of others. Her most notable stage work includes the lead in Nuts for which she won the LA Drama Critics Circle and Drama-Logue Award, Daddy’s Dying, Who’s Got the Will? directed by Del Shores, Names at the Strasburg Institute in which she played Stella Adler, and the premiere of John Ford Noonan’s Talking Things over With Chekhov. She began her stage work in Chicago with the Body Politic and in England with the Oxford Mummers. She recently directed Dinner With Friends by Donald Margulies.
Karen holds an MA in Dramatic Literature from Northwestern University. She serves on the Screen Actors Guild Board and Actors Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Her best credit, she says, is mother of the luminous college sophomore, Olivia.
